When was the last time you checked the next of kin details you provided to your SACCO?
For some members, it may have been five, ten or even twenty years ago. Since then, a lot may have changed. You may have gotten married, welcomed children into your family, lost a loved one or experienced other significant changes in your life.
Yet, the information you provided when you first joined the SACCO may have remained the same.
Qwetu DT SACCO encourages members to regularly review and update their next of kin details because as life changes, so should the information that helps safeguard your financial interests and those of your loved ones.
When joining a SACCO, members are required to provide important personal information, including details of their next of kin or nominated beneficiaries.
It is easy to regard this as just another section of the membership application form. However, these details can become particularly important in the unfortunate event of a member’s death.
Under Kenya’s Co-operative Societies Act, a properly appointed nominee has a legally recognised role in the transfer or payment of a deceased member’s shares, interests and other monies, subject to the applicable law and SACCO by-laws.
Having accurate and properly recorded nomination details helps the SACCO establish whom the member nominated and facilitates the necessary processes when the time comes.
Consider a member who joined the SACCO while single and nominated a parent as their next of kin. Several years later, the member is married and has children, but the original nomination has never been reviewed.
Or perhaps a member nominated someone who has since passed away.
These are situations that can easily arise when members do not regularly review their records.
Marriage, the birth of a child, separation, the death of a nominee or a change in personal circumstances are all good reasons to revisit your next of kin information.
Updating these details helps ensure that your SACCO records reflect your current wishes rather than decisions made many years ago.
Members are encouraged to periodically confirm that:
Members should also ensure that any changes are formally submitted and recorded by the SACCO. Simply informing a family member of your wishes does not replace the official nomination process.
Qwetu DT SACCO has made the Change of Next of Kin Form available through its official website.
Members who wish to review or change their nominations can download the form or visit their nearest Qwetu DT SACCO branch for assistance with the required process.
Once completed, members should ensure the necessary documentation is submitted through the SACCO’s official channels and the changes are acknowledged.
