Borrowing with a Plan: Qwetu Members Take Home Lessons on Credit and Saving

Responsible borrowing and a consistent savings culture were among the lessons members took home as Qwetu DT SACCO opened its 2026 Education to Members series in Voi Sub-County on Saturday, 5th September.

Members turned up in large numbers across Voi town and surrounding communities for sessions that helped them better understand their SACCO and the financial decisions that affect their households.

The discussions brought attention to what should come before a loan application: a clear purpose, an understanding of the repayment terms and a realistic assessment of what a member can afford. Members gained a clearer understanding that qualifying for a loan is only one consideration. Borrowing also requires a plan for using the money and meeting repayments alongside everyday expenses and other obligations.

The message was practical: a loan should serve its intended purpose, with repayment considered from the outset. Understanding that commitment helps members choose an amount they can manage and avoid placing unnecessary pressure on their income.

The sessions also encouraged a savings culture, highlighting the importance of setting money aside consistently. Members were reminded that saving should be a regular habit, with contributions guided by their means and financial goals. Building savings can help them prepare for planned expenses and reduce the need to borrow whenever a financial need arises.

Members welcomed the explanations, with some saying the sessions had helped them understand their SACCO more clearly. Their response showed the value of bringing these discussions closer to the communities Qwetu serves.

As the education series continues, Qwetu will carry forward these conversations on borrowing responsibly, saving consistently and making financial commitments with greater understanding.
